For the record, I might point out why I would use an E-I type transformer and high speed diodes. AC has a lot of trash on it. Toroid transformers usually have a lot of capacitance between the input and the output windings. This means that there is a high frequency sneak path for the AC garbage to get into the power supply and ground. All you have to do is measure the capacitance between the input and output windings of 2 comparable transformers, one being E-I and the other toroid. The toroid will have many times more capacitance, because the windings are wound next to each other. The Harris hi speed-soft recovery diodes, as well as Shottky, etc. act closer to ideal diodes. This can be measured, but you have to look at the CURRENT in the diode, and this is difficult without a current probe, because the diode is off ground on both sides. If you look into this, you will see that normal diodes generate a lot of AC garbage at very high frequencies and this can be avoided with hi speed-soft recovery diodes. Some hi speed diodes can turn off quickly, but will still ring at high frequencies, so soft recovery types were developed. Hexfreds are also hi speed and soft recovery types.
