APM Tweak - My observations

24.31.114.32

I have followed the APM tweak threads with both interest and sadness. Interest in that I am always open to new and inexpensive ways to increase my music enjoyment. Through building the DIY room lens, CDR damping improvements, shorting plugs, etc, I am grateful to Jon Risch and others who have improved the resolution of my music system. Sadness in that it seems "se" has lost sight of the real reason why the forum exists - and it is not to expound upon esoteric electrical theory. I am a computer professional and technical in nature. I can recite in every unemotional detail the full complement of specifications for my Audio Research gear. In the final analysis, however, all of joules, ferrite chokes, tank circuits, etc. is completely irrelevant. Only enjoyment of music matters.

Since I am impatient, I built the APM tweak using the RS choke, rather than the suggested AQ unit. In all honesty, I cannot tell any sonic improvement in my system. On the other hand, I think that has more to do with my house than APM's sincerity in the improvements he perceives. When I built my house four years ago, I specified two dedicated circuits in the finished basement. All of my components are routed through a Monster Cable HT-2000 suppressor connected to a Hubbell "hospital grade" outlet through one of the dedicated circuits. While the Monster unit is clearly not as sophisticated as the PS Audio or Accuphase models, the sonic improvements of using it are most certainly there. I suspect that these are the variables that have determined whether or not the APM tweak offers audible improvements in a given situation. In a recent thread, APM revealed that his environment is that of a World War II vintage house. AM's apartment complex may well be similar in it's need for filtering assistance.

Do I regret having spent $8.00 for an unnoticable improvement? Nope. I will continue to invest modest amounts of money in anything that might provide me the ability to hear more in my vinyl and CDs. Just today, I rewired the APM unit from a tight five coil configuration to that of a looser four coil one. Only time will tell whether or not that makes a difference.
