Hi Sam!Thanks for the kind words!
I imagine that Thorsten will agree with me: In a 2-Way active X-Over, you are better off crossing at the lower point (600Hz or even higher, if need be). That's my preference! I don't like anything that mars or impairs my sound from 1,000Hz to 20,000hz. That, of course, relates to my "Remember the violin!" comments. Also, LF are like Japanese Sumo wrestlers (rough & tough), while HF are like Opera Sopranos (delicate & frail). Thus, I'll avoid inserting obstructions in the HF range. Now, personally, I don't mind a X-Over from 600Hz to 1,000Hz. I mean, if it is too costly or too problematic, I will go above the optimum 600Hz point. Why not? CAR's highly lauded T-1s crossover at 800Hz, and many audiophiles rave about the sound they make. Also, the highly touted Altec 604 Duplex-speakers crossover at either 1,000Hz or 1,200Hz. Even nowdays, years after the demise of Altec, there are hundreds of professional recording studios that still use Altec 604 speakers. Hmmm! Makes you think, right? That's why I find a "higher" LF crossover acceptable (i.e. 600Hz to 1,000Hz).
Sam...a suggestion on JBL.
If you do searches on the Speaker Asylum, searching for "JBL," you will find hundreds of posts in the archives. That's a great way to learn about these vintage pro-drivers. Also, check out JBL's pro website for info. Good luck on this!On Thorsten's suggestions...
That JBL 075 Bullet Horn Tweeter (Alnico magnet) sounds like great choice in a 2-Way system! I imagine one can take off that metal-horn and replace it with a DIY wood-horn. That would subdue its metallic tone. Is that possible? Any comments appreciated!
The JBL K-110 10" Woofer (Alnico magnet)is also a great choice for SET amp use. It has all the right characteristics: 98dB, 60Hz to 8,000hz, 8 Ohms, 3" VC, 6.5lbs Alnico magnet assembly weight, 10,200 Gauss, etc.
A notch above this JBL K-110, you have the JBL K-120 12" Woofer (Alnico magnet). Here you have a few significant characteristics: 101dB, 50Hz to 6,000Hz, 8 Ohms, 4" VC, 12lbs Alnico magnet assembly weight, 12,000 Gauss! Sounds great to me! This speaker loses 2,000Hz, but it shoots-up the efficiency by 3dB to 101dB with its huge, 12lbs magnet-assembly!!! I happen to like this woofer for SET amp use. Remember, for each 3dB gain in efficiency, you must double your amp's power. This, of course, is not easily done with SET amps. Any comments?
My best regards to everyone,
Gariver
