Re: Two way systems..."What about the piccolo?"

Hi Thorsten!

Ha! I love early Harpsicord music too! Wow! 70KHz! I doubt I can hear anything that high nowdays!

Yes, I agree. Upper-harmonics are important also! Much of the sweetness of classical music has to do with those upper harmonics. Actually, the mark of a great speaker is its ability to resolve those tricky and delicate upper-harmonics. Don't you agree?

My Altec-Lansing frequency-chart places the upper harmonics of a violin from about 3,200 to about 16KHz. The Piccolo, that tiny, little flute, has a HF register close to 5KHz. However, its upper harmonics are not as high as the violin. It only goes up to 10KHz.

Anyway, in my way of thinking, Sam's "frequency region" of 150Hz to 2,000Hz was just a little bit short in terms of both the HF and the LF. I prefer the 2,500 mark for HF. On the LF, I would lower the mark from 150Hz to 120Hz. Here I'm thinking of the possibility of adding a powered subwoofer in the future (with its own electronics). I say 120Hz because many powered-subs go up to 120Hz, not above that point.

BTW, Opera freaks demand above-average response down to 80Hz to catch the lower register of a bass singer (at about 82Hz). Here I'm thinking of Justino Diaz, a local Basso who sang along with with Placido Domingo in many recordings. He is very, very demanding when it comes to those low bass-notes! His answer? Big boxes, of course!

So my idea of the most important "frequency range" is from 120Hz to 2,500Hz. The best way to do it is with a horn, not a tweeter. That way you can go from a LF of 800Hz to 20KHz, including just about everything in between! The Harpsichord's 70KHz? Hmmm! Well, I'll have to give that some additional thought.

My best regards to all,
