Hello,The Porter Cable has a lot going for it, that's why I recommended it. I have a PC 690 that is doing permanent duty in a router table, they are great for that. You can buy one 690 motor assembly and get a really great plunge router base for it, as the other poster said. You can also get a D-handle for it. Once you have used a D-handle router, you'll want to throw rocks at a regular base. Nowadays, though, a plunge router is considered the way to go for a lot of work, and I agree with that. I would not want to give up my plunge router, but a D-handle is better for some things.
PC is well built, by the way, and the base has become the standard for the industry. So if you need to buy bearings or the like, they are usually made for the PC base. You can get bearings for other models, but you might have to mail order them.
A couple of comments on router bits. For the difference in the price, it does not pay to use anything but 1/2 inch bits. Being able to use either is handy if you need a "throw-away" Taiwanese/China bit. I have used the cheap (Grizzly, MLCS, etc.) bits and they are good if I am doing a project that will trash the bit. But, for most work, you get what you pay for and good bits are worth the price you pay for them.
I agree, by the way, with everything the others have posted here. I do have an older Sears router and I still use it. It has a handy switch on the handle and is very well designed ergonomically. But, it is not as heavily built as the PC, Dewalt, Hatachi, Makita, etc.
Incidentally, Porter Cable is the hand tools arm of Delta Macchinery. Delta and PC are widely used by professionals, so all the tools tend to be of at least good quality and perform well.Good luck to you.
