My favorite router is the Porter Cable 1 1/2 HP fixed base with the
D handle. I think it is the same basic router John describes in the kit. It comes with both 1/4 + 1/2" colletts. I install millwork for a living and have used a lot of routers and the PC is my favorite.
For light duty (non commercial) use the larger Sears routers will save you some money but are not as well built. Plastic is used instead of metal so it is lighter and more prone to vibration when cutting affecting the smoothness of cuts. Balance is important too. Amps are more important than HP.
Don't cheap out on the bits. Better bits cut better longer and save money in the long run. I like the Bosch, but there are many good MFG's
Routers have been a popular and contrivesial subject over at Madisound.com. Check the archives. Write if I can be of help.Fred Griffith
