dgrambo, I've never found a particularly good use for the flatside base on an Elu plunge router I own. I imagine that it would come in handy in tight quarters because flats would allow collet closer to an obstuction, although it's not been of any significance in my experience. There is one thing you should know about plunge routers in general,... their handles and motors tend to be higher above work surface, and consequently, somewhat harder to control,(top heavy).
FWIW, I reach for the fixed base 8 out of 10 times, and would reccommend same if I had to choose one or the other. In the case of Dewalt this would be DW610, a close runner-up when I bought PC690.
If you have the opportunity, get your hands on the models you're considering, and note what FEELS right to you. Comfort and ease of use go hand in hand. While appealing at first glance, I'm of the mind that extra attachments,(like vacuum hoses)can really encumber use.
In addition, you'll need eye and hearing protection, routers are messy creatures and have LOUD voices,(not unlike some children)!
Let the sawduat fly! PJ
