Seattle John:Here is what I did: I used a piece of 3/4" birch ply and a 1/4" birch ply and sandwiched the foam using 9 nuts and bolts long enough to protrude about 1/4 out the back, (the back being the 1/4 inch side.) (Try to compress the foam evenly.) I then screwed the brackets to the 3/4 side using 3/4" screws.
I mounted the now sandwich and brackets to the wall using 4" concrete screws screwing from the bracket-3/4" side. Because my walls are plaster and metal lathe, I preferred the concrete screws over sheetrock screws for their cutting power and strength. Additionally, I had to drill several exploratory holes because the shelf wasn't centered on the studs, (READ: WAF!) If location isn't a problem for you simply cut your wood wide enough so that you'll hit your studs.
The reason I extended the bolts by 1/4" is because I didn't want to have the entire surface area of the wood mating with the wall. My thinking was it was better to "spike" the thing to the wall thereby reducing the nodes of vibration transmission, in effect having barely one square inch of contact as opposed to over a square foot. Who knows...I liked the idea.
Lastly, my brackets had three holes on top where the shelf goes. Instead of resting the shelf on the iron itself, I used four field points attaching them through the existing holes with a small nut. I was then able to further refine the level of the shelf by simply raising/lowering the spikes. Using 3 spikes is easier to level but I had nightmares using 3. You know, the kind like where you're running in slow-mo but getting nowhere...well, I kept watching $2000 worth of TT tumbling in space with me reaching for it but always getting there too late!!! Changing to 4 points stopped the dreams. :)
Hope this clears things up.
