I hadn't thought of the dissimular plywood/foam sandwitch idea but I can see how it could make mounting and squaring the shelf much easier.The idea of a rubbery damping material is a nice idea but I worry about too much damping as it can suck any life out of a table. From what I've read on the other forums on this site, it's quite possible, which is not really a good thing IMHO.
