You might want to test spray painting a scrap MDF board before painting your actual shelf. I built an isolation shelf out of 3/4" MDF and tried spray paint it, but it soaks up too much because it is so dense. I ended up using latex acrylic and a smooth paint roller to actually cover the MDF.good luck.
