Re MDF painting: MDF is a most excellent material for painting--it can
give a mirror finish and will never crack from substrate movement.
The key to getting a great finish is sanding and priming. I've never
used anything but a sprayed on primer, but I see no reason why a brushed or rolled on primer wouldn't be just as good. Apply a heavy
body primer--probably at least two coats, then block sand to create
a surface free of scratches--probably finish sand with 200 grit paper.
Then repeat with the top coats, sand between. For a high gloss finish
sand with 300 grit then buff with Mcquiers automotive compounding
mix for hand applications--this will take a bit of effort, but it
will give you a professional finish.
OR, don't prime, sand well and lightly spray with a black aerosal
spray paint and call it good.
