Re: Bose 901's .... First Impressions ....

I love the way you are giving the Bose Flagship a change....

Back about 1981 I had two friends that wanted to opgrade their stereos and asked my advice. They both took my advice on the Big 180W Yamaha Rcvr - One went with DQ10's including the SUB, the other went with 901's Both rooms were about 14x20 with high peaked ceilings. The DQ10's were a peice of cake to setup - pull them out a bit - big deep sound stage. Nice tight bass, too once we figured where to add the sub. The Bose's took a bit longer to lock in... We ended up, after trying them first on step ladders, hanging the 901's - fairly close the rear wall - the front of the speaker was no more than 30 inches from the rear wall and the angled inward a bit - so as their axis would cross about 8 feet behind the listening position. I worked with each speaker individually with a mono signal - playing with the equalizer each way - took a whole weekend. Very satisfying result though - I can still hear Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat", Bos Skaggs, Fleetwood Mac's Landslide all sounding very nice on the Bose's. They worked well at different volumes, too. Not that the DQ10's didn't perform, Jazz at the Pawnshop, Kenny Loggins' Christopher Robbin particularly when cranked up just below the Yamaha's limit put you in the front table of the performance... still (in my head)
