True DAT... the live music scene has that "thing"

Unfortunately, the term "hippie jam band," doesn't do much to covey the reality of the to the music or the fans these days. It probably worked well enough to describe Phish, The String Cheese Incident, and Phil & Friends to name a few, but holy crap--the lid has really blown off of this thing in the past decade. For example, bands like Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, MMW, Charlie Hunter, John Scofield, Garaj Mahal, The Roots, Particle, and Les Claypool, all of whom are connected by the same "scene," are hardly reminiscent of what could be considered its kernel, the Grateful Dead. (They all DO jam, however.)

What I love about these bands is that "live" is the entire reason for their existence. Something special happens during many of these shows which can never be emulated in a studio. It's as if the players and audience are tuned into the same cosmic radio station at the same instant. Even when those moments only last a few seconds, I can still recall them years later. In that sense, they ALL have the quality Dave C was asking about--they have that "thing," in spades.
