I finally got around to listening to that album quite recently...

...and while I don't like to sound negative about things, I felt it was over hyped. In its defense, it's some of the most accessible electronic/psychedelic music I've listened to. There isn't anything too strange that might scare people off, which I suppose is why Shpongle has become more popular than many of its peers. Also, while I feel they make too-frequent use of "tacky" effects, especially vocal ones, they STILL manage to produce very unique sound--I'll grant them that.

Unfortunately, I can't get around the feeling that the target audience are teenagers and early 20-somethings turning-on for the first time and getting a kick out of EVERYthing, especially Terrence McKenna and his tales of DMT gnomes. It IS an interesting album, but I wasn't as impressed as I wanted to be, and after the first listen I put it away for a while. On the other hand, I went through so much trippy electronic music in the 90's that I'm more than a little jaded and opinionated by now, so please take my comments with a grain of salt :)

Off the top of my head, other groups that I would LOOSELY fit in the same category would be: Banco de Gaia, Juno Reactor, The Orb, Eat Static, The Irresistible Force, Higher Intelligence Agency, A Positive Life, Biosphere, System 7, Global Communication, Spacetime Continuum, Sun Electric, Saafi Brothers, Future Sound of London... so ArdRi, if you like Shpongle, you may like some of them even more.
