Interesting. I have a Rotel 971 and have alwasy been quite fond of it. I thought it could be bright and sibilant when I ran it through a Krell KAV300i into B&W CDM1SEs, but even then only on certain recordings. Now I run it through a CJ Premier 17LS and CJ MF2250 into Renaissance Preludes, and it's neither bright nor sibilant. In fact, I compared the McCormack UDP-1 (CJ version), Krell Standard MkII and NAD M55 to the Rotel in my current system and, while all three were certainly more refined sounding (smoother and more detailed), and while I'd readily trade the Rotel for any three of them in an even swap, I continue to enjoy the (admittedly somewhat raw) immediacy of this non-upsampling player. Not disputing your experience, but it sure is different from mine.
I tend, therefore, to agree with the posters who suggest the problem is not with the CDP when it comes to brightness and sibilance.
