No, I have never tried the output through those headphone jacks and only used the RCA digital in and the rear analog out. But the Benchmark really only started to sing after extensive modding by bSteve Nugent at Empirical Audio - the mods (turbo & the rest) are listed at the Empirical Audio site.I ran it through the Plinius 16L preamp for awhile but upgraded to a McIntosh C200 recently to give an even better output to the amps & full range electrostatic speakers Sound Labs "Majestics". I'm now hearing superb articulation and soundstage BUT the downside is it is revealing previously disguised distortion in some (NOT all) CDs, mostly of the popular variety, but not all classical CDs are pristine either.
Hooking up gear can be a black art and what suits one system might not work in another. My experience over the last 5 or so years has been a steep learning curve with the conclusion that achieving awesome sounding music from digital is possible, but far from easy, particularly from "off the shelf" components. Success only came after extensive player and DAC modification.
