That's software defined radio. I recently got the Airspy HF+ Discovery and a loop antenna (the antenna is discreetly hidden on my second floor balcony) and the combo does a nifty job on long wave, medium wave, shortwave, air and weather, and ham bands.
I've pulled in some great FM DX and can't wait for the AM DX season to get started. Shortwave isn't what it used to be, but there still are some signals/stations to tune in.
I'm using the SDR# (sharp) software and it takes time to explore and learn, but yesterday I finally downloaded the software update (v1891) and played with the FM co-channel splitter. Amazing. It allowed me to "erase" a local FM station and hear a weaker station some 60 miles away ... ON THE SAME FREQUENCY.
Looking forward to playing with this setup even more.
