Thanks Richard for noticing my post/question. I have always used an ADC XLM MKII and recently tried an old Stanton 681 Triple E(bought this in college because someone said it HAD to be tried-went immediately back to the ADC)....same hum. Then I bought a new AT440MLa....same hum, although this is one SWEET cart for the money! I've looked at and tried most of the tweaks for this TT. I also replaced the RCA cables and the 'hair' wires inside the arm itself with the correct gauge and color(job straight from the pits of Hell). Yes, I'm using the original arm and have even checked out and oiled the pivot bearings. I've conversed with 'Joel' in Germany in email and bought his Thorens 'update' PDF. I tried all the different ground configurations that Thorens suggested in the owner's manual. I tired grounding the motor to the metal chassis(not a factory recommendation) and the hum was worse. I even went back in the arm to make sure my solder connections were correct at the headshell. I did ask Joel about the motor capacitors and there was no answer-probably something lost in the translation. That's what I want to try next and thanks for the 'push' there!
I don't have another receiver to hook up to anymore-my old Kenwood has disappeared. As strange as that sounds, it's not half as strange as the reality. I've tried both phono inputs with the Onkyo....same hum. It does not get any louder as the arm move towards the center(motor running). Also, with the motor off, I can turn the gain all the way up and it's almost dead quiet. I guess I'm down to those old caps....what could it hurt anyway? Of course if it doesn't solve this, I'm back to square one. What I can tell ya, is that hum has never been a problem before, so it makes sense that something has failed with age....like a lot of us.;-)
