i was surprised after assembling the amp again that it was now the right channel that remained on while the left was silent; it seems that prodding the pot causes the imbalance to shift from one channel to the other. i can press on the volume knob while listening and hear it happening as i do... this proves that it is the pot causing the problem, does this give anyone a better indication of what's wrong? cleaning, solder connections, whatever else...
