Need help with this crossover circuit

I have an Ampex console with the original speakers in it. For some reason, they still work. I wanted to rebuild the crossovers, but would like to be sure I am doing it right. There is a cap inline from the input of the amp to the positive terminal of the tweeter. There is a resistor across the pos and neg terminal of the tweeter. There was also a coil across the pos and neg terminal of the tweeter. My Dad, who bought the console in 1957, said that soon after he bought it, a tech came by to make a mod on the crossover. Apparently, all he did was clip the leads to a coil so it was no longer in the circuit. I was told that the resistor across the tweeter is used to shelve the output of the tweeter to keep it in line with the output of the woofer. The only thing I do know is that the cap is used to pass the high frequencies to the tweeter and that the woofer is run full range. Can someone tell me what the coil is used for? The diagram below is crap, but it is the best that I could do.

positive input from amp -----> capacitor ---------------> tweeter pos
