I'd almost be willing to bet after reading all this that the volume pot inside is an ALPS RK-40, sometimes referred to as the "Black Beauty". They do "sound" very very good, but I've dealt with 4 of them now while repairing gear that the little "fingers" on the wipers have managed to cut all/almost all the way through the carbon traces. They really don't display the noisy characteristics of a dirty pot, but they will be really, REALLY erratic in operation.
Also, it's usually the back side of a stereo RK-40 that goes bad first. There is a one-way press on clip that holds the back wiper assembly in place, and they are usually pressed on so tight that it actually warps the heavy delrin disk that supports the wiper itself, making it press MUCH harder against the carbon trace than it needs to.If the pot is in fact an RK-40, I recommend replacing it with a TKD-2CP-2511 series pot. It's not that much more money than trying to locate a NOS RK-40, and the difference in sound more than offsets any price difference, IMHO.
