Still likely it's a bad contact in a pot

Sounds like a bad contact in some pot's wiper. Depending on the circuitry, once the wiper is deconnected, you can have its connection to the following buffer gone loose. If the buffer has sufficiently high input impedance, you can get any sneaky signal that goes around, and there is a lot of them.
As for the failure being gone after a power down/power up cycle, it's perfectly possible to trigger on/off the bad contact following temperature change and chassis dilatation.
