The Crowns were really bad!
When I first started working for the Grateful Dead in 1970, I noticed that they had a Crown power amp in the corner of the room. I asked about it, and they told me that it did not have the effective output of a MAC 75 tube amp that they were using already. We traced it down to the extensive protection circuitry that they used. It was pretty slow (slew rate) as well. It was really a motor servo amp, marketed as a hi fi amp.
