bigot: a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudicesLet's do get something straight here, DAN, the only person this definition applies to here is YOU. You and your, orthodox basic EE concept of how a circuit should be designed. You and your, I am the only one who can make an amp not noisy and it can't use tubes and it has to have feedback attitude. Let me tell YOU something. I have a hybrid amp that uses tubes on the output and it is DEAD quiet into 100+ db/watt horn speakers (more like 105 db Avantegardes). I mean, put your ear to the speaker with the gain at full (it has a passive attenuator attached for level control) and you hear nothing. It runs Class A, has no feedback, and uses both tubes and Fets. It is designed by guys from east Europe who probably have forgotten more about electronics design than you ever knew. They don't suffer from myopia of the intellect like you is all. They know that an amp can have tubes and still be very quiet. An amp can have no feedback and still be very quiet. Just because you have no clue how that is achieved doesn't make it impossible. Apparently there is a lot you don't know but are too hard headed and narrow minded to learn.
"so if one is not concerned with noise than just about any amp will do."
Oh so other than noise you DO think they all sound the same!! Is that what you want to tell me now? So much for "my amps only make second harmonic and sound better than most other SS amps". All smoke and mirrors I see.
You are right about one thing, horns don't need much power but they sure like VERY high quality power. This means Geddes has probably never heard half of what his speakers can do because he couples them with cheap Pioneer receivers. If you weren't so bigoted with your own misguided views on amplifiers you might realize this. Geddes is bigoted in that he thinks only the speaker and the room are relevant to good sound. Another smart guy blinded by his own thoughts and who closed his mind by thinking he knew all there was on the subject.
I have gone through my stint with SS amps, pure tube amps, OTLs, and hybrids. Feedback, no feedback etc. so not really an audio bigot because I see there is more than one way to skin a cat but of the practical designs I have heard the best sounding all had tube somewhere and generally no feedback. That is my experience and thoughts at the moment. They are subject to change unlike yours, which are set in concrete and thus form a basis for bigotry.
