When I hear an expensive which on paper should sound better than does, I used to get this urge to reconstruct it on site. I tend to get a notion that the system is one simple alteration from sounding sensational.["If anything else, fewer and fewer people are experiencing good live music, hence they have no idea how music is supposed to sound like."]
From an audiophile's POV, the problem I have with similar comments is it excludes musicians, sound engineers, producers, and other recording executives.
I also suspect it's not always as simple as a distinction between not knowing and not caring. Many of the aforementioned just don't have that certain 'it', for passing along the qualities we treasure. Some might call it PRaT, others 'the music' or some other endearing quality.
