When I attended the two audio shows last year in Los Angeles, the one thing I was disappointed by was the lack of what I thought was "really good sounding systems". Save of the Cheer Audio room at the smaller VTV show. (As of now, I remember the good rooms at the 1997 show more than at this recent show.) What really struck me as odd was the plethora of expensive digital sources that to me didn't really sound that good. The only other thing I'm sure about is that there are a lot of bad digital playback devices and a lot of bad recordings. The end result is opinions on both that are just all over the place. The best we can do is make observations that will hopefully turn on the light bulb above someone's head.
If anything else, fewer and fewer people are experiencing good live music, hence they have no idea how music is supposed to sound like.
