Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

In the Stereophile blind amplifier test people heard "differences" 62% of the time when an amp was compared with itself

Audiophiles have such a strong bias toward reporting they hear differences that they will do so 50% to 75% of the time when no differences are possible -- when a component is compared to itself!

This level of bias makes the "I know what I hear" boast meaningless.

Science is not advanced by unproven "I know what I hear boasts" -- the hobby degenerates into ever more expensive wires that make no audible difference when the brand names are hidden and magic pebbles.

When audiophile fantasies are never separated from facts, the hobby stops progressing and becomes a religion mired in the past with vinyl and tubes.

Marketers know ANYTHING can be sold, whether it really affects the sound or not, if people can be convinced to "believe in it". They'll never check and will reject any other audiophile who does a controlled listening test whose results don't make them happy.

Audio equipment is a tool to reproduce music at home. How well the tool works does not require the listener to face the potential bias from knowing the brand names in use, nor does it require comparing two components playing at different volumes. Yet that's exactly what is done in sighted component comparisons.

Amazing isn't it -- people listen to two components playing at different volumes and report they sound different!

Salesmen love this non-science approach!
