Re: When y'all interested in real discussion, y'all get back to me.

Everybody's an expert at something, right?

Well, I'm an expert at music. I have advanced degrees from prestigious institutions, I've been playing professionally for over 35 years, been teaching for 30, getting paid to write about it for 20. I've probably forgotten more about music than you'll ever know. ;-)

I like to hang out at the music board. I learn a lot, and I like to chime in with opinions and questions. There are guys on that board who have forgotten more about music than *I* will ever know. What fun!

Now, imagine: I see an armchair musicologist's or amateur musician's post on the music board that is clearly in error. Since I'm obviously analogizing here, let's say it perpetuates a popular misconception, say, that Mozart died penniless or that Beethoven called the opening theme of the 5th "fate knocking at the door."

I might have several possible reactions.

1. Leave it alone, it's a waste of time.

2. I could correct the misconception, point out the truth, give the reasons *why* it's the truth, and perhaps recommend a good book on the subject.

3. I could say, "That's completely wrong! Do your homework! Can't you google?"

My inclination would be 1 or 2. By every indication, your inclination is invariably 3, and therein lies the difference between you and me.

Now, I am sincerely grateful to all the inmates who have helped me and educated me over the years, some who have gone the extra mile in a way I find quite remarkable. These inmates exemplify for me the kind of spirit that makes AA a great place to be.

I can't repay them; I can only try to remember to thank them, admire their patience, and try in some small way to be helpful to other inmates here, too. Given the limits of my own knowledge--though I have over four decades of practical experience building, modifying, and troubleshooting electronics, I don't know jack sh!t about electronics theory, alas--and the vast repository of experience and professional activity visible at AA, my chances to do so are similarly limited to musical issues. That's okay, that's what I do, even if it seems a mere pittance for the value received.

I find it unfortunate that for all the knowledge and experience some inmates have, they have no interest in being helpful or actually engaging in a conversation that might be of interest and benefit to all. Rather, they act like the rooster who thinks the sun comes up every morning because he crows at it.

That's life, I guess. Takes all kinds! Don't want to share? That's cool. Want us all to watch while you strut and preen? We're watching, though it seems obvious that the amusement derived has a limited shelf-life.

I apologize, sincerely, for making this hugely off-topic post. What I've said belongs in an email, but then, you don't accept email. I shan't bother you again. I'll just limit myself to having fun conversations with inmates who enjoy them, too.

take care,

Mark
