Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Re: And this relates to what?

It's an analogy.

We observe that person A stutters while person B does not, yet there is no apparent reason why this is so, nor are there measurements--as yet--that explain it.

We observe that amp A sounds good, amp B does not, yet there is no apparent reason why this is so, and standard measurements show no difference.

Research is discovering, perhaps, why person A stutters. If it finds the reasons, then they can be measured and, perhaps, therapies developed.

Research has sometimes revealed hitherto unknown forms of distortion; measurements to quantify them and methods to reduce them soon follow. (As in the case of TIM.) What was a mystery becomes merely another aspect of performance that is measurable and thus, perhaps, "treatable."

The article is thin gruel; the first and last paragraphs are the meat (sliced thin) while the rest is stuff that's been known for years.

take care,

Mark (stutterer!)
