The fact that the same disk (which obviously must sound identical to itself) can sound different on different CD playback systems implies that there's a lot to that whole reading and reconstructing thing.....It's an interesting idea that "identical" (when comparing 2 disks) doesn't just mean the same bits, but the same mechanical arrangement on the disks.
You are of course completely correct (IMO) that the same data stream SHOULD always sound he same if correctly reproduced. It's the fact that there a lots of data conversions in the end-to-end process (and each one is a potential source of error) that causes so much variability.
