That's what I meant when I said that the fundamental is no longer there (at any instant when the freq is not equal to the fundamental). Fundamental is the wrong word here; I guess it's the zero-modulation frequency.
As far as my "not visible in a spectrum analyzer" comment; I was responding to Dan's suggestion that non-repetitive events will still be visible in the output waveform. A SA doesn't feel like the right tool for viewing non-repeating effects.
