Thanks for replies. The hard drive does need an external 12v drive and I use a 12 v linear power supply.

I then connect the usb link up cable and everything works fine, not a bad sound. Iff I disonnect the 5v supply it stops working. If I then connect an external 5v power supply it still does not work. As soon as I reconnect the 5v supply provided by by the usb port evrything works fine again. For some reason there seems to be a link between the usb power supply and the data cables ?
