Hey Adriel,
This is not surprising, as ASIO is a protocol that is made so that the ASIO-device is (sort of) slaving the computer. This means that the Soundcard / DAC is in charge of the player-software and requires a fixed bit-depth corresponding the music material.
In case of Windows´ updated kernel-streaming protocol WASAPI, the computer and player just "pours" out a stream of data that the DAC can read or accept to it´s abillity.
In this protocol there is no depenance upon each other.
