The horror!!!

I know watcha mean. That's why doping these things out in a truly scientific manner, even
assuming that the criterion for judgment is our own highly fallible and variable sense of hearing,
would drive me nuts. I usually just pick a solution and go for it. That's why in recent years I
have made 2 rules: (1) use a one-box CD/SACD player; (2) use a preamp with a built-in phono
section. It's not merely the interconnects that pose a problem, when one adopts the two-box
solutions for digital and phono sources, but also the input and output jacks necessitated by the
use of those interconnects. It would be hard to convince me that two jacks, two plugs, and 3 feet
or more of boutique wire can sound better than a few inches of unshielded wire inside the
chassis of a one-box cdp or preamp. (When possible, you definitely don't want shielding.) There
are however some theoretical reasons why SOME speaker wire may sound better than NO speaker
wire; I just don't know whether this applies to ESLs (which don't generate a back EMF, for
example).
