I always forget this: Is the pin-out of a 6CG7 identical to that of a 12Au,t,x7? If so, then the 6CG7 would be another candidate to try in place of the 12AU7 linestage tube, but I think the answer is that the pin-outs are NOT the same, and modification of the PCB would be necessary. I agree completely about the current optima for an ECC99, but apparently it "works" well enough with lower than recommended current, too, based on the testimonials here. (I have no idea myself.) The appeal of the ECC99 is that you CAN just plug it in and try it.
