Please don't confuse maximum rated plate voltage with the class A operating point, chosen not to exceed the maximum plate dissipation. Things look very different when you plot a load line for use in our amp's topology. It's almost vertical. Even the 6AS7G has a maximum 250 volt plate rating. Given the domestic tubes, the 6AS7G still has a 15 volt advantage. My TungSol Industrial Tube Manual specifically warns about using the 7236 in fixed bias service.
I too am all for saving money and a full set of Russian tubes will set you back $208. You'll want some spares too, $260 is probably more realistic. I've tried to get many different tubes to work reliably in an M-60. Only the Russian 6AS7G do really well. I feel your thermonic pain :).
