Thanks, Al. Just tumbled to this after doing some research on audioasylum.com - seems I'm confusing speaker phase with absolute phase. I've just noticed that the Cardas test LP I have includes a normal/reversed polarity voice test, so I'll try that and investigate more with music. My main concern was that the preamp wasn't being fed a balanced signal, rather than the MP-3 being at fault.
