Quad 63s + M60s - noise issue?

0

My system currently consists of a pair of Quad ESL 63's fed by a pair of M50s (modified to M60 Mk1). I've hooked up an AH! tjoeb 99 CD player directly to the amps; I found the direct hookup to yield a significant increase in transparency and clarity vs. a passing the signal through an old (though by no means shabby) Theta preamp. The combination of the Quads and the atmas is nothing short of magical - the sweetest mid range I've ever heard, and bass from quads far in excess of what conventional amps can elicit.

Recently however I've noticed a steady buzzing sound coming from both speakers whenever the amps are turned on (i.e. no detectable noise when they're in standby). This is true even when I've disconnected the CD player from the amps. The latter lead me to belive that the amps themselves were the source of the noise. However, with my trusty Theta preamp inserted in the chain I get dead silence with the preamp on mute, though the noise returns when the mute function is disabled. I'm at a bit of a loss when it comes to explaining the above phenomenon. Why would I get dead silence from fully powered amps with a muted preamp in line and yet detect noise with NO source connected (i.e. no input fed to the amps which are connected to speakers)?

I'm not entirely sure any longer that the amps are the source of the noise I'm detecting. Part of the problem may of course be the loosening of the panels' Mylar layer (probably the only disadvantage of pairing atma's to Quads). If anybody's able to shed some light on the matter, I'd very much appreciate hearing from you.

Bashir.
