It Just Ain't True!

0

Gizmological falsehood aside, who was it that said such close matching was required? Who said there were sonic benefits? This just ain't true! There is no problem to solve, so why try and solve something that doesn't exist in the real audio world? This is the beauty of the design. These amps still sound good and will still put out rated power even if the output tubes are not closely matched. Individual bias would be prohibitive, requiring a pair of pots and a driver tube for each output tube pair. The only time to really worry about output tube matching is if you find a real plate current disparity. Once biased properly, if a given tube is only drawing 30 mA of plate current, and another is drawing 120 mA, then it is in your best interest to try and do a bit better. The 30 mA tube isn't doing much to contribute to the total output power. The 120 mA tube is working too hard and will probably not be reliable long term.

The anal audiophile knows when a member of the body is over the deep edge. In this case, the edge is well past sight.
