If you have good corners and would like to put speakers in them, then why not go directly for a corner speaker and get decent bass response while taking up the least real estate? Many people don't have two good corners so it's not an option but if you do, then make the corners work for you. You can put say an EV Aristocrat mere inches from the wall (2 - 4) as it was designed and the box is fairly small. Measure about 2 foot out straight from the corner and center up about a 20 inch front on that which is about 2 1/2 foot tall and you have the rough size of a well positioned EV Aristocrat. The Aristocrat was sold in different configurations with a single full range driver (pretty common) to a three way horn tweet/mid. There are other good corner speakers but you mentioned you heard EV and liked it.
I have Altec Model 19s and the sound is wonderful but they are definitely large and do NOT live up against the wall/in the corner. Klipsch Cornwall is a good speaker that was meant to live close to the wall or in the corner...hence the name...but if you've got good corners, then use 'em.
