Hello,
I was in a "vintage" furniture store recently, and they had a pair of Electrovoice speakers playing. (Esquires? I already forgot the name, big by today's standards, but not too big.) These were set up with one speaker on top of something, and the other I did not even see amongst the piles of clutter. However, there was a naturalness and immediacy to the sound that has stuck with me. I have lurked in this forum, but have always used speakers employing "tragic domes" (Thank you, Mr. Brennan).
This experience has given me the itch to try some Altecs. (Why not Electrovoice? After reading the archives Altecs seem most likely, but I am open). I am looking to find out more about the Altecs like the Valencia, 604/605, the monitors in this size range with the 604 (Big Red?), the Boleros, maybe the 14, 15 and such.
So, being a small speaker, apartment dweller, I ask:
Can these speakers go directly against the wall? Or should they be pulled 2'-4' out like so many (most) speakers? This is a possible deal breaker, right off.
Can they go in the corner, or is this only if the cabinet is a corner cab?
Do these need a huge room? I have 12x18 w/ 10 ' ceiling. I currently set up on the long wall.
Will these cause me problems with my neighbors? I mean, more than any other speaker, assuming I listen at my current neighbor-friendly volumes? (Being on the floor, being huge, etc)
Are the Boleros a good Altec introduction? Meaning, if I like the Boleros, I could start talking my wife into the others, and I will probably like the bigger Altecs even more? Or, if I don't like the Boleros, I should just leave quietly? Size wise and cost wise, this seems like a good place to start. But, it may just be irrelevant.
Thanks very much
