When you tested the line stage as is and the ‘garbled’ sound did not show up, I would conclude the problem is in the DAC section.
We have to narrow the field again.
First is to test if it is not the digital interconnect and/or the digital input socket.(remember my first thought about a bad contact)
Do you have a second input (USB input) which you can use to test ?
Use another interconnect (does not have to be a digital cable, it is only for testing) and replace the digital input socket and listen again.
When you want to improve your sound, use a WBT nextgen input socket, you will not believe how much different/better that will sound.
