Thanks Vi. Having said I would wait for responses, I tied it last night (though with a 5692 which is bordering on being thrown out anyway). I'm fairly sure it's fine and within specs. And yes, the sound is great - richer, fuller and warmer. At first the bass felt like a lot less (I was using the Sylvania 6SN7WGTA chrome top, brown base which is very good). After an hour it all came up again.
I'll give it a day or two and if nothing fries I'll put my favourite 5692 in there, the Sylvania 5692. It's a while since I tube-rolled in my pre and a lot's changed in the system since then, so I feel another rolling evening coming on, but as I recall the Sylvania 5692 has an extra touch of "magic dust" to the sound.
