Re: speaker Questions

Having read through all the rsponses made so far, I'd like to add a few thoughts:

as part of the high efficiency chase, the voice coils in the HE (Kit 3) speakers are silver. Depending on the speaker cable you use internally, and the rest of your system, you may find them a bit bright. Certainly in an all Audio Note system, they aren't. The factory built Lx Sigs use Lexus cable, and neither Art Dudley nor the people who heard them at VTV NJ/NY found them anything like bright. (And at VTV, all the other cable in the system was silver.)

They certainly sound quicker than the lower efficiency versions. Part of the high efficiency "high" is that the speakers require next to nothing to get started, and it's that moment where no signal becomes the tiniest of signals where a lot of the magic happens.

While the kit parts are matched very well, they obviously were not matched in the cabinets being used. That makes a bit of difference. Speaking of cabinets, while I imagine Brian's CNC'd cabs are better than what all but the master cabinet makers could construct, there are still a couple tricks up the factory's sleeve. For the tightest possible fit of the front panel inside the sides/wrap, the front is made the exact same size as the internal dimension of the space it's going into. (Wood to wood interface with absolutely minimal glue sounds better than wood-glue-wood.) "Well, how the heck can it fit together, then", you ask. By essentially freezing the front panel, which shrinks it just enough to fit. When it comes up to room temp, it's an insanely tight fit. This in not the sort of thing you can do at home!

(BTW, a similar thought process resulted in the diamond tip in the IQ3 and all IO cartridges being the same size as the hole in the cantilver. The square sectioned titanium cantilver is heated, expanding just enough to accomodate the stylus shank and next-to-no glue. Again, a diamond-titanium interface transmits the miniscule vibrations better than a diamond-glob-of-glue-metal interface found in nearly all other cartridges, regardless of price.)

Bottom Line: Either Kit offers an insanely cost-effective way into the Audio Note sound.

Oh, sorry, the 45 question. Yes, unless you listen to Mahler in an aircraft hanger at concert levels, I think you'd be very happy with the Kit 3 and a 45 amp. Having lived with both the Yamamoto A08 and the Audio Note proto Paladin 45 amp at great length, I can attest to that with no reservations. It's a fantastic combination. In fact, I believe the Hi Eff E's are the only reason the Paladin is being developed!
