Thanks everyone for all the input.
I run a pair of bi-amped Bozak Concert Grands with matching N-106 crossover. The crossover has no gain controls. The speakers are powered by a pair of McIntosh MC2300 amps, both of which have gain controls. I've had this setup for maybe twenty years.
When I first assembled this system, I matched the gains on both amps, but was disappointed with the resulting sound. Too much low end, it was muddy, muffled, and lacking in high end clarity. By simply dialing back the gains on the lower end amp, the proper balance was achieved, resulting in (to my ears) the absolute end-game sound I had been seeking.
I believe my speakers will outlive me, but I'm not so sure about the amps. I've come to realize that any piece of vintage gear I own: a) will not require less servicing in the future, only more; b) there will not be more qualified techs to work on this stuff, only fewer; c) wait times for servicing will not become shorter, only longer; d) the cost for servicing will not become less expensive, only more expensive.
Thus, my inquiring about modern amps that I see with no variable gain control. In my situation and with my speakers, that would not work. I'm not planning on ditching my vintage gear any time soon, at least not yet. Just looking at options to consider for the future.
