Start with the Cardas position.

The Cardas website contains a page dealing with room setup and has specific formulas for Magnepans. I used it to find the position with best bass in my rectangular room.

While you are setting the speakers, try the sideways orientation. This means to have them facing directly away from each other so that the sides with the tweeters are closest to the listener. This is how I have my MG-20s arranged, with the centers of the bass panels at the Cardas points. The advantage is more reflected versus direct sound, which gives a better room ambience retrieval on well-made recordings. Liz Hare of Stereo Unlimited in Walnut Creek, CA, suggested this orientation to me.

No matter how you set them, be sure that the first reflection areas on the side walls are treated to diffuse and/or absorb treble. These are the areas where you would see images of the speakers if the walls were covered with mirrors and you were sitting in your listening position. Your need for resistors may indicate that you are getting too much early and coherent reflection from these areas of the sidewalls.

Good luck, and use this asylum for lots of tips about getting better sound.
