Sorry you're having so much trouble. There's clearly something seriously wrong, the speakers should not be mismatched like this, or anything like. Each pair is tested before they leave the factory to make sure that they meet spec. More likely, something failed, maybe in shipping. I'd try troubleshooting them by forex opening them up and measuring tweeter resistance -- it should be roughly 4 ohms -- and swapping the crossover output between tweeters using jumpers, in the off chance that's where the problem lies. If those didn't localize the problem, it could be a mechanical problem, e.g., a magnet that somehow came off during shipping (they're held to the plate both by magnetic force and glue) and is preventing part of the diaphragm from vibrating.I suggest you call the Magnepan factory on this one. They are very friendly and have far more experience troubleshooting these problems than we do. I imagine they also want to hear if you've had a bad experience with their distributor. They could presumably help with the troubleshooting and arrange to send replacements for any bad components, and for your damaged sock.
When I visited the Magnepan factory, someone called from India because the local distributor had given him screws of different length for his feet and he was wondering where they should go! A quick discussion with the technical staff ensued, and a new set of the right screws was sent to him. That's the level of service you can expect, they prefer to do things the old fashioned way, rather than sending customers to a call center somewhere to listen to hold music.
