My advice is that you start scheming. My warning is that every damn thing you do will cost you. Accept the concessions you force upon yourself, but seek to minimize their impact. Your sound control challenges will be greater than mine were, assuming the house above will be used coincidentally with the basement space. The sting of not addressing such an important issue will last much longer than the sting of forking out the cash to solve it as best you can.
Obviously, everyone's situation isn't the same and not everyone has a retirement coffer to raid. I wish we had the funds to do a few things differently, but eventually, we have to aim for realistic goals. This setup surely isn't perfect, but it works for me - and I intend to continue working with it. Imperfect though it is, it is very, very satisfying. If you can do it, then go for it. It's probably pure lunacy, but sanity is overrated.
