That approach does have a downside - lots of bass would be produced in the garage which isn't nearly as well acoustically 'encased' as the room. There were other conflicts as well, all of which could have been sorted out, but a simple sub was just easier.
Leland lent me a Def Tech Super Cube Reference for an in-home demo. It actually worked fine with my MMGs, but demonstrated an authority with which I was previously unfamiliar. Coupled with the 3.6s, the bass is awesome - deep and solid without any hint of boominess.
In fact, the guy who asked about an Eagles concert DVD, made a comment on about the second note about how realistic the bass was. His eyes got really big and he said, "You're right. This is way better than that Bose system I want to buy." I had never seen these guys act the way I saw them last night - they were groovin'! Systems like members of this asylum have just aren't their thing (nothing wrong with that), but it's nice that they can appreciate the difference.
It was really loud for the entire duration - first time I'd seen the needle on that X350 dance that much (or that far past the halfway point). Between every song there was cheering. Between every song there were comments about how great it sounded. One of them even said that he doesn't think I'm crazy any more.
I know the approval is from non-audiphiles, but I still think it's valid. So, kudos to Magnepan, Pass Labs, McCormack, Definitive Technology, AudioQuest and anybody I left out (like Mye Sound ;-).
