Did the QR wire that you used to replace the regular wire have the same resistance? This could have been potentially part of the problem. I would also think that the newer QR speakers have better more powerful magnets in them (this is only a thought not a fact). Which could lead to a much lower output for the same power being applied. I am currently considering using foil instead of wire to rebuild my tympani 1d's (tweeters and mid/bass panels), and I know that the resistance of the foil is less than the resistance of the wires. So I would look into that first before you pull it apart.
